Default Should I buy a 2001 Forester??

Hello, I am new to this fourm. Hopefully you guys can help me. I know someone who was a big Subaru guy...he owned Legacy's and Foresters. He recently left Subaru because his head gasket went out on his Forester. He said that is a common problem on the 2.5 Liter Engine. To get to my question. I know someone who has an 2001 Forester and the transmission went out. He did not fix it but purchased another car. His son is a mechanic/dealer and stated that he would sell it to me for $800.00 US dollars. I have known both men for about 22 years.

I am hesitant for a couple of reasons: 1. His dad brought his Forester from an auction. He had it for about 3 years. I believe it has about 200,000 k on motor. 2. Do not know history of car so I do not know if head gasket has been replaced. He said he has not had a problem with head gasket.

The body is in good shape. Maybe I should buy one that I can trace the history...do not want a money pit on my hands.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If it is well maintained then I think it is worth buying.
