Default P0032 question

Question for anyone who might have some advice:

I love Foresters...now on my second one, an '07 2.5X. It's a manual and it's been really good to me these past few years...

BUT, it's needed work recently and now I need help. There was a P0420 code that kept coming back, so my mechanic put in a new cat. Then there was a P0032 code, so my mechanic put in a new OEM front sensor.

The problem is, the P0032 code immediately came back. My mechanic (who is really good) said I needed a Subaru specialist to see if it's a wiring issue, or if I need an ECU update or even a new ECM. So...brought it to my local Suby dealer, and they say they tested the new front sensor and it's bad...not just the code, but other diagnostics say it's bad. They say they need to replace the front sensor before they can check anything else-- and others here have suggested it might be the wiring, corrosion on the connector, relay, or the ECM/ECU issues.

They want to charge me $700 just for a new sensor ($200 from my usual mechanic), and then try to diagnose whatever else is the issue.

Do I need to replace the sensor to see what might be wrong here? I can't imagine it's bad-- the CEL/P0032 code came on immediately after new sensor was put in, and the car has only been driven 30 miles since then. Is there any other way to diagnose what the issue might be? Any advice welcome, thanks.
